We aim to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis

The problem

Syphilis and HIV are infections that are especially devastating in pregnancy. They can pass from mother to child, leading to newborn death, pregnancy loss, or disability for the child. Unfortunately, many pregnant women around the world don’t get the testing or treatment they need for HIV and syphilis.

The Solution

Diagnosing and treating HIV and syphilis in pregnancy is cheap, effective, and protects both a pregnant woman and her child.

What We Do

Healthy Futures works to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. We provide technical assistance to strengthen health systems in policy, financing, and governance - so every pregnant woman can access free, sustainable care.

Since July 2023, through our collaboration with the Department of Health, we’ve reached more than 3,100 women in the Philippines. Our work is built on our SET framework - Supply, Empower, Train - plus, Monitoring & Evaluation to measure impact. With these pillars, we’re scaling proven solutions to ensure healthier mothers, babies, and communities.

We measure success through:

  • Testing rate – how many pregnant women are screened for HIV and syphilis at their first antenatal visit

  • Treatment rate – how many of those in need receive timely treatment

Our long-term goal is zero babies getting infected with syphilis.

Where We Work

We focus our work on the national government level and prioritise communities with the least access to care.

  • Philippines – program launched in 2023

    • Our team of 5 Filipinos and Filipinas is handling most of the work there through our locally-registered affiliate organisation.

  • Angola – expansion started in 2025

    • Our team of 2 in Angola interacts with government stakeholders in Luanda.

Our Future Plans

We aim to help national and local governments take the lead as both implementers and funders of HIV and syphilis care in pregnancy. In the long term, we plan to expand into more countries that need support in eliminating mother-to-child transmission.

Our vision: a world where every newborn is free from HIV and syphilis, infant mortality is reduced, and mothers and babies thrive.
